Recognitions from the EAO
The strength of the EAO has been achieved throughout the years with the help of devoted men and women who have worked hard in boards and committees to define and set up numerous projects for members of the association.
Thanks to this, the association has greatly evolved over the past 25 years and is now offering a range of activities and services in education and research.

André Schroeder (1918 – 2004)
EAO Honorary Membership – Bern 1997
André Schroeder was awarded honorary membership during the 1997 Bern congress in recognition of his decades of research into implant materials. He is renowned for his paper, published in 1976, which provided histologic evidence of osseointegration with direct bone-to-implant contact in non-decalcified sections. At that time, these findings were a scientific sensation. They complemented the work of P-I Brånemark and laid the scientific foundation for the remarkable advancements made with osseointegrated implants in the following decades.

P-I Brånemark (1929 – 2014)
P-I Brånemark, the father of osseointegration, was fittingly the first person ever to receive honorary membership of the EAO in recognition of his intrinsic role in the field. His ground-breaking discovery – that human bone would not only tolerate, but integrate titanium into its living tissue – is rightly credited with the birth of modern implant dentistry. Implants were developed and had been studied before, albeit without long-term clinical success. Despite encountering much scepticism and resistance in his early studies, he succeeded in converting the overwhelming majority of the dental community to the advantages of osseointegrated implants. His concern regarding the undue commercial influence on the emerging field led him to convene the first Munich gathering of concerned scientists that led to the founding of the EAO. The pursuit of learning for the sake of constant improvement was paramount in his professional life and this aim is reflected in the activities of the EAO.

Message from the EAO Board of Directors
It is with deep sadness that the EAO has to announce that two well-known and merited members of the dental implant community have recently passed away. The Board of Directors extends their deepest sympathy and commemorates Karl Ludwig Ackermann and Dieter Weingart in honouring their outstanding contributions. They will be sincerely missed.

Karl Ludwig Ackermann
Karl Ludwig Ackermann died on 31 July 2020 from a heart attack while he was about to leave his office. Karl Ludwig “Acki” Ackermann was one of the pioneers of implant dentistry in Germany and worldwide. Together with his partner Axel Kirsch, they developed the IMZ implant and later on the Camlog System. Acki has been an outstanding person in our community and in dentistry in general. He received his surgical training at the university of Mainz before moving into private practice. As a private practitioner, he maintained a true connection with the scientific side of the profession. He served in many national professional organisation and he has literally lived for his clinical work as well as for teaching and education in implant dentistry. The number of lectures, courses and seminars he gave is almost uncountable. As a “wet finger dentist” in the best meaning of the word, he always convinced his audience not only by his authentic clinical expertise but also by his science based approach thereby bridging the gap between science and clinical practice.

Dieter Weingart
Dieter Weingart passed away on 13 August 2020 after a short fight against pancreatic cancer. Professor Weingart had been Head of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Katharinen-Hospital in Stuttgart since 1996. He was one of the leaders in implant dentistry in Europe and served in many professional associations with different roles. He was President of ITI in the years 2005-9 and was ITI Honorary Fellow since 2012. He studied in Tubingen and Freiburg and worked in his early career in the Department of Prof. W. Schilli. Besides being involved in major maxillofacial surgery, he was a great implant surgeon and contributed with great enthusiasm to the development of implant dentistry in the early nineties. Dieter was a true gentleman, a devoted husband and a beloved father. Whatever he did, he did it with enthusiasm and politeness. Apart from his family, that was for sure his greatest passion, Dieter loved his vineyard and his wine, sports cars and living in Stuttgart.
